Cindy Mathers
Transformational Leader & Author
Cindy lives in Australia and has a strong affinity with First Nations people in her country. Through many years of working in education, health, mental health, not for profits and volunteering she witnessed first-hand the lived experience of her First Nations students, mentors and colleagues. She learned much and used her skills and training to create new ways of educating and mentoring that were grounded in a human rights approach. Her mission is to show what is possible when we are in alignment with our purpose and knowing that we are all connected and whatever we do to others we do to ourselves. She was sponsored to write a book called DELVE-ing into Cultural Humility: how respect and deep listening can heal a nation. It is a handbook for non-First Nations people who wish to learn Cultural Humility and it is the sort of book she would have liked when she found herself nursing in a remote First Nations Community in 1999. She had never nursed a First Nations patient or lived in their communities, and she made many mistakes that could have been avoided if she had known better. Since then, she has worked in four states of Australia and gained valuable experience which has inspired her to share her learnings with others so as a country we can become respectful of human rights and of each other. She is here to show what is possible when we are prepared to take the road less travelled.
